ADSC Graduate Programs
ADSC is developing a new generation of Ph.D. graduates in a top engineering and science setting, bringing the strength of the Illinois College of Engineering to a dynamic new joint Illinois-Singapore environment. This initiative offers students the intangible qualities that have led so many Illinois students to become great innovators and leaders, such as founders of
YouTube, PayPal, Netscape, Match.com, Eudora, Wind River Systems, and Siebel Systems, to name but a few. It is attracting top research talent, providing for an environment where researchers can interact closely with corporate research and development laboratories, nurturing specialized research teams, and supporting the training of graduate students and post-doctoral scholars.
The Human Sixth Sense Program in particular represents a unique opportunity to have a major impact in transforming how human beings utilize information technology in the coming century. It offers students the chance to be at the forefront of a major program for Singapore's future that will expose them to a world-class Ph.D. traineeship experience, world-class faculty, top facilities, networks of international peers and industrial collaborators, and a strong infrastructure for spin-off opportunities.
How It Works
Students must apply to and be accepted by a graduate program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and completion of the program will result in a Ph.D. degree from Illinois. Students from around the world, especially those who are receiving their bachelor's degrees from universities with very strong programs in computer science and electrical engineering, are welcome to apply.
To fund their studies at Illinois, students from Singapore may apply for scholarship support under A*STAR's scholarships & awards program. A*STAR will fund ADSC's Singaporean students through A*STAR's scholarship programs (including stipend, basic travel, and education fees), unless circumstances dictate that other methods will be considered. For students funded under A*STAR's AUIP program in partnership with Illinois, students will typically complete the first two years of their Ph.D. graduate studies in residence at Illinois. During that stay, students will satisfy the residency requirements for their degrees, but perhaps more importantly, will also become integral members of their research groups and become acclimated to the College of Engineering's proven and successful research culture. They will spend the next two years of their program in Singapore, having developed bonds at Illinois that will allow them to remain fully engaged with their research groups at Illinois even as they integrate their work into the ongoing programs in Singapore.

How to Apply
- All interested students must apply to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to request admission to graduate school at Illinois. Students must choose a specific department to apply to. It is likely that most students will apply to the Department of Computer Science (CS) or the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), but some other departments may be more appropriate for some students. If you have difficulty choosing the right department to apply to, or if you're interested in applying to a department other than CS or ECE, please contact Marianne Winslett, the ADSC Director, for advice.
- The CS Department is recognized throughout the world as a leader in education and research.
The department and its graduates have long been at the forefront of modern computing, from the ILLIAC in 1952 to the internet age of YouTube, Mosaic, and PayPal.
Students who graduate from CS's top-five-ranked graduate program are among the most highly recruited on campus and are prized by companies worldwide. For more information and application information, see CS's website for CS graduate student admissions.
- The ECE Department has built an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research, and service. Its over 100-member faculty has produced innovations in microelectronics, semiconductors, telecommunications, photonics, image and signal processing, electromagnetics, computer architecture and circuits, and bioengineering, to name a few. ECE students are exposed to an unmatched breadth and depth of expertise, learning from the best in the classroom and in the laboratory. For more information and application information, see ECE's website for prospective ECE students.
- Students eligible for A*STAR scholarship programs must apply to those programs separately. Visit the web site of A*STAR's University of Illinois Partnership (AUIP) PhD Programme for details and application instructions. Students who have questions about the AUIP program should contact Asghar Mirarefi from the University of Illinois to discuss their situation (mirarefi AT illinois.edu, or +1-217-333-5732).
- All applicants must contact Director Marianne Winslett after submitting their application(s), to inform her that they have applied.
