ADSC Postdoctoral Fellow program

We seek ten ADSC Postdoctoral Fellows to conduct research in computer science and computer engineering at the Advanced Digital Sciences Center (ADSC), a research and education center established by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under funding from the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore. ADSC Postdoctoral Fellows will carry out research projects with faculty from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who are participating in ADSC's Human Sixth Sense research program. Our Postdoctoral Fellows will be based at ADSC's Fusionopolis offices in Singapore; we also ask our Fellows to spend a minimum of three weeks per year at the Illinois main campus, to foster direct interaction with their Illinois colleagues.

ADSC Postdoctoral Fellows will build excellent research records in collaboration with Illinois faculty. In addition, our Fellows will develop their research leadership skills and forge ties to the many multinational firms, startup companies, and university and government research groups in Singapore.

ADSC Postdoctoral Fellows can take advantage of the many specialized research facilities in Singapore and at Illinois, including substantial high-performance computing facilities and thousand-node Intel-Yahoo!-HP clouds in both locations.

ADSC Postdoctoral Fellows will conduct research in one or more of the large collaborative subprojects of the Human Sixth Sense program. We anticipate that those subprojects will include efforts on continuous real-time health monitoring, intelligent transportation, and computer vision. We seek Fellows who can contribute in a wide range of specialties, including reliability, security, and privacy for data, computer hardware, networks, and distributed systems; Web-scale information mining and integration; sensor-based systems for transportation and medical devices; compilation of high-level programs to hardware specifications; computer vision, image analysis, and scene understanding; simulation of networks and distributed systems; cloud computing; and medical devices. Successful applicants will have compiled a strong record of research accomplishment during their PhD studies at a leading research university. Applicants must have recently received (or anticipate receiving) a PhD in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field. ADSC Postdoctoral Fellows must complete all requirements for the PhD before assuming their position.

The fellowship duration will range from one to four years, depending on the needs of the individual Fellow. We encourage Fellows to stay for at least two years, to take advantage of all that ADSC has to offer. Start dates are flexible. All ADSC Postdoctoral Fellows will receive the following benefits:

  • Total compensation package of approximately US$75,000
  • $5000 first-year equipment allowance
  • Specialized research equipment as needed for individual projects
  • Startup funds to support travel and research expenses
  • Career mentoring services
  • The opportunity to help supervise Illinois graduate students
  • Family travel and relocation allowance for moving to Singapore
  • Travel and living expenses to spend three or more weeks per year at the university's main campus in Illinois
  • Family health benefits

Apply to the ADSC Postdoctoral Fellowship program via the online application system. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis once they are complete (including a minimum of two reference letters). December 1, 2009 is the official closing date for applications to receive full consideration, but we welcome late applications as well. While interviews may take place before December 1, no offers will be made before that date. Questions about the ADSC Postdoctoral Fellow program or application process may be directed to adscjobsearch AT illinois.edu.

ADSC Senior Scientists, Principal Scientists, and Distinguished Scientists

ADSC seeks four Senior Scientists, Principal Scientists, and Distinguished Scientists to conduct research in computer science and computer engineering at the Advanced Digital Sciences Center (ADSC), a research and education center established by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under funding from the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore. ADSC scientists will carry out research projects in collaboration with faculty from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as part of ADSC's Human Sixth Sense research program. ADSC scientists will be based at ADSC's Fusionopolis offices in Singapore, with up to three months per year of residence at the Illinois main campus to foster direct interaction with their Illinois colleagues. All ADSC scientists will receive adjunct appointments in the Coordinated Science Laboratory at Illinois. Generally, an ADSC Senior Scientist position is equivalent to an Assistant Professor position at Illinois; an ADSC Principal Scientist position is equivalent to an Associate Professor position at Illinois; and an ADSC Distinguished Scientist position is equivalent to a full professor position at Illinois.

ADSC scientists will help to shape and lead the subprograms of the Human Sixth Sense Program, including anticipated research on cyberphysical infrastructure for continuous health monitoring, intelligent transportation, and computer vision. ADSC scientists will advise, co-advise, and supervise ADSC's Illinois PhD students and postdocs, as well as the ADSC undergraduate summer interns, while working with the ADSC Postdoctoral Fellows to achieve the goals of the Human Sixth Sense Program. ADSC scientists can also take on other programmatic leadership roles at ADSC. ADSC scientists are encouraged to develop close relationships with Singapore's many multinational firms and startup companies. ADSC scientists can take advantage of the many specialized research facilities in Singapore and at Illinois, including substantial high-performance computing facilities and thousand-node Intel-Yahoo!-HP clouds in both locations.

Successful applicants will have compiled an outstanding record of research accomplishment and leadership, and hold a PhD in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field. All ADSC scientists will receive the following benefits:

  • Competitive salary and housing allowance
  • $5000 first-year equipment allowance
  • Specialized research equipment as needed for individual projects
  • Generous startup package for travel and research expenses
  • Advisor/co-advisor relationships with Illinois PhD students
  • Family travel and relocation allowance for moving to Singapore
  • Travel and living expenses to spend up to three months per year at the university's main campus in Illinois
  • Family health benefits

To apply for these positions, visit the online application system. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis once they are complete (including a minimum of three reference letters for Senior Scientist positions). December 1, 2009 is the official closing date for applications to receive full consideration, but we welcome late applications as well. While interviews may take place before December 1, no offers will be made before that date.
